Prologue

She walked with determination, not bothering to look ahead, her eyes shut tight as she hoped to earn some money to invest. She was tired of living without purpose, having only completed secondary school despite starting school. Throughout her life, she had not attended class more than thirty times. If you were looking for an unserious student, she would be the perfect example. However, the people in her village respected her as an educated person because she could speak English, which was only used by those who had received modern education. As Umaima walked, she noticed Sulaiman, a boy from her line, walking with their house's goat. She called out to him and instructed him to hold the goat's head, using some basic English that made him tremble. She continued on her way and arrived at a square where the men of the line saw her. Umaima smiled and raised her hands as if she were speaking, while Sama'ila came with a spear and followed Kazan's footsteps on the side of the road.

Umaima closed her eyes as if she were speaking, and the young men of the line quickly went to where a chicken was dying. Yayi and Sama'ila stopped their machine in front and arrived at the place where the chicken was killed. Seeing that the people had covered the place as if a life had been taken, Umaima kept walking as fast as she could. She noticed a short, plump woman walking toward the place, and then she turned to leave. However, she looked back at Samarin and said, "Samari, Insha'Allah I will start selling tea tomorrow, and you will come to buy it in the evening. Although there are people in this place who cannot afford it, many people will still come." Umaima was known for her fighting and cursing, and she had caught all the children of the line, so the students of the line were not kind to her. However, she had fans because of her charm and her ability to talk to her parents and her English, which was seen as impressive in Zaria.

As Umaima crossed the street, she heard Nadabo calling her "Malama Umaima." She quickly turned around, and Nadabo showed her the new barber shop he had opened. Nadabo said, "Kinga, my shop is open for barbers. I am the one who designed the barber shop, and I saw all the lines here. No one knows why I said to let Kizo do the shop's name." Umaima added her opinion and straightened her hijab's neck, saying, "That's right! So Mani, get ready and listen to the name she will say, and then put it!" Mani said, "Well, Nadabo, I can hear you." Umaima was silent because she didn't know the name to say in English, so she slowly remembered a newspaper she used to buy from Baba. She sat on her feet and looked at one line of the newspaper, but she couldn't read it. Tomorrow, she would buy another one. The man was ready to write, and after he finished, she read it out loud, "SOFA BARBER SALOON????." She turned around, filled with happiness, and Nadabo gave her two hundred naira, saying, "Umaima, take it. Oh no, it's not charity, please accept it." She signed, smiled, and said, "Well, Yowa Nadabo, let your people know that I will start the business as soon as our results come out, and then we'll move on to secondary school. Oh my goodness, Nadabo wished her well." She turned around, proud of herself, and left the place. Nadabo turned and looked
