Description/Story:

UNCLE DATTI Complete Document Written By Eedatou

Description

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

She was a nine-year-old girl, attired in Western clothes, wearing a gown and adorned with a beautiful baby pink ribbon over her head. Despite her tender age, her endearing personality knew no bounds. Dimples decorated her cheeks, accentuating her radiant smiles and infectious laughter, adding to her charm.

"Aunty Aina! Aunty Aina, please give me the chocolates that Uncle Datt bought for me," she pleaded while on her way to the parlor with her affectionate guardian. Her love for chocolates was unparalleled; thus, she frequently visited their home, often requesting Uncle Datt to buy some for her.

"Dear Khadija, I cannot comply. Haven't I cautioned you against consuming sweets? Is it for your own good?" Aunty Aina replied, her voice tinged with a hint of sorrow.

"Ooh, Aunty, I apologize, I apologize. Just grant me this one request. I promise not to ask for more from today," Khadija pleaded, her remorse evident.

Hesitantly, Aunty Aina conceded, "Hmmm, you are still young and might not grasp the implications of consuming excessive sweets. But since you've promised, fetch my glasses from the table, and I will accompany you to retrieve them." Rana, due to her chronic eye condition, relied on medicated glasses. Without them, even in the absence of darkness, her vision would deteriorate, affecting even her sense of touch.

As though anticipating the request, Khadija fetched the glasses from the table and handed them to her. Aunty Aina, accepting them, stood up and, taking her sister's hand, they entered the room, ensuring to check for any eavesdroppers outside the window. One by one, she retrieved the chocolates and handed them to her young charge.

However, rather than taking them, Khadija opened her mouth and began crying loudly, vehemently refusing to accept them. Her wails were so intense that Uncle Datt, upon hearing her distress, felt his heart ache, unsure of how to comfort her. He vowed to meet her demands, no matter what it took.

In the midst of consoling her, Aunty Aina wondered why Uncle Datt didn't treat her in the same way. She questioned whether he loved Nana, and the thoughts raced through her mind without finding any answers.

When he appeared, she ran to Nana, but her countenance turned to shock, leaving her speechless. Trying to calm her, he coaxed, "Hush now, my dear, tell me what's troubling you. Who are you?"

Aunty Aina's mouth gaped, astonished by what she was witnessing. Nana's breakdown persisted, with tears flowing until she eventually fell asleep. The sight overwhelmed Uncle Datt, leaving him at a loss, not knowing where to rest his troubled mind.

Zumburo sobbed, "Uncle, I want chocolates, please don't give me more," her tears streaming down her face as she shook her head.

"Alright, be quiet now. Let's go and get some for you," he reassured, taking her hand as they left the house. Aina remained frozen in place, feeling like a lifeless statue, contemplating her thoughts about Datt.

After the commotion subsided, she went to the kitchen and prepared a fragrant pot of Jollof rice. As its aroma filled the air, she changed into her gray lace attire, exuding an elegance that surpassed mere physical beauty. Her allure was intrinsic, a beauty that emanated from within, embodying grace and kindness.

Returning to the parlor, she sat in quiet solitude, waiting for their return. As the call to Maghrib prayer resounded, she noticed Aina's disheveled appearance and felt her gaze upon her.

"Hey, what's with that look?" Datt inquired, gently tapping her hand.

With a smile, she replied, "Oh, my dear, for how long must I remind you not to indulge this girl with sweets? You know well, there's a history of diabetes in our family. It's either inherited or you've conveniently forgotten."

"Well, my dear, I know, I haven't forgotten. You also know that diabetes doesn't afflict children at such a young age. Once a person crosses 40, that's when the warning you keep in mind becomes pertinent."

"But you're spoiling her too much," she insisted.

He smiled, saying, "Everything I do for Nana, I don't tell her. It's in our blood."

Observing the impact of his words, he instructed Nana to wait in the room for them. Once she left, he embraced Aina, kissing her tenderly, expressing his love until her concerns dissipated.

Being a government employee, he prepared for the office the next morning, having an important task ahead. At the Plateau Hoptil Hospital in Jos, a specialist doctor awaited him for a breast surgery case that had been assigned to him. Upon arrival, they began their work.
